To put a startup online you need four things: a domain name, a hosting plan, an email address on that domain, and an SSL certificate. That is the whole list. The launch sequence
Six steps, in order. Most founders get from nothing to a live site in an afternoon.
1. Register your domain
Pick something short, easy to say aloud and easy to spell. A .co.uk signals a UK business and is usually cheaper to renew than a .com. Register it yourself rather than letting a web designer register it on your behalf, so the domain stays in your name. 2. Choose a hosting plan

3. Set up your business email
An address like hello@yourbusiness.co.uk does more for credibility than almost any other small change you can make. 4. Install your website

5. Point your domain at your site

Look at it on a phone before you look at it on a laptop. Most of your first visitors will arrive on mobile from a Google search. Confirm your contact form actually sends, and that the email arrives somewhere you read.

What year one really costs
For a straightforward startup website, a realistic first-year budget looks like this:
- Domain: roughly £10 to £15 per year for a .co.uk. Watch the renewal rate rather than the first-year offer.

- Building the site: nothing if you build it yourself, a few hundred pounds for a freelancer, more for an agency.

If you built your site with AI
A lot of founders now start by asking an AI tool to build the site. That works better than it used to, and it changes nothing about hosting.
An AI-built site still needs hosting. Whatever produced the files, they have to live on a server with a domain pointing at them and a certificate securing them. AI writes the site; hosting is what makes it reachable. The only exception is if you used an all-in-one builder that hosts the result for you, in which case you are paying for hosting as part of that subscription, usually at a higher price and with less control.
If the tool gave you HTML, CSS and images, that is a static site and any standard plan will serve it. If it produced a WordPress theme or a PHP application, you need hosting with PHP and a database, which every plan here includes. If you started on Wix, Squarespace or another builder
Plenty of businesses launch on a website builder because it is the fastest route to something live, then hit a limit: the monthly cost, the inability to do something specific, or the realisation that the site cannot easily be taken elsewhere.

Five mistakes founders make with hosting
1. Buying on the introductory price. A pound for the first year and £15 a month afterwards is not cheap hosting. Always ask what it renews at before you commit, and check our tracker of domain renewal price increases.
2. Letting someone else own your domain. If your web designer registers the domain in their name, you do not control your own address. Register it yourself and add them as a user.

4. Assuming someone else is backing things up. Ask specifically whether backups are included, how far back they go, and whether you can restore one yourself.
