WordPress Emails Going to Spam After Moving Host? Here’s Why

Why WordPress and business emails suddenly land in spam after switching hosting, and the fix: updating SPF to match the new server, re-issuing DKIM keys, and re-testing deliverability step by step.

Everything worked before the migration. Then you moved your website to a new host, and suddenly order confirmations, contact form notifications and even ordinary replies started landing in customers’ junk folders. This is one of the most common – and most fixable – post-migration problems, and it has a simple cause: your domain’s email authentication records still describe your old server.

What actually breaks during a host move

Receiving mail servers judge every message against three DNS records on your domain:

  • SPF – a list of servers permitted to send mail for your domain;
  • DKIM – a signature proving the mail really came from you;
  • DMARC – the policy for what happens when a message fails the first two.

When you move host, your website starts sending from a new server with a new IP address. If your SPF record still lists only the old host, every email your site sends now fails SPF. If your DKIM keys were set up on the old server, the signatures no longer match. Nothing about your content changed – but to Gmail and Outlook, your mail stopped being verifiable overnight. Our plain-English guide to SPF, DKIM and DMARC explains the three records in more depth.

The fix, step by step

1. Update your SPF record

Edit the TXT record on your domain so it includes your new host’s sending servers (your new host will publish the exact include: value to use). Remove the old host’s entry once mail has fully moved. Keep it to a single SPF record – two SPF records on one domain is itself a failure.

2. Re-issue DKIM on the new host

DKIM keys live on the sending server, so they must be regenerated after a move and the new public key published in your DNS. On Switchweb this is a one-click job – see adding a DKIM record on Switchweb hosting.

3. Check your DMARC policy

If you had DMARC set to p=quarantine or p=reject before the move, unverified mail is being actively junked or refused until steps 1 and 2 are complete. Confirm the record is still present and correct.

4. Make sure website mail is authenticated at all

If your contact forms and WooCommerce emails send via PHP mail rather than SMTP, a host move is the perfect moment to fix that properly: send through a real mailbox on your domain using an SMTP plugin. 5. Re-test deliverability

Send test messages to Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo addresses. In Gmail, use “Show original” on the received message: you want to see SPF: PASS, DKIM: PASS and DMARC: PASS. Until all three pass, keep working down the list above.

Why this matters more than it used to

Since 2024, Google and Yahoo have enforced authentication requirements for senders: mail without SPF and DKIM alignment is increasingly rejected rather than just junked. A host migration that silently breaks authentication can therefore cost you real enquiries and orders – often for weeks before anyone notices. Checking these records is part of any competent host switching process, not an optional extra.

FAQs

Only my contact form emails go to spam – why?

Form notifications are usually the only mail sent by the web server itself; your ordinary mailbox correspondence goes via the mail server. After a move, the web server is the machine your SPF record does not yet know about, so form mail fails first.

How long after fixing DNS will delivery recover?

DNS changes propagate within a few hours (respecting your record TTLs). Reputation recovers quickly once messages authenticate – days, not months, for a domain with no spam history.

Can my new host set all this up for me?

They should. When we migrate customers to Switchweb, SPF is pre-configured for our platform, DKIM is generated from the control panel, and we test delivery before you switch over. Our email hosting pages cover what’s included.

The short version

After any host move: update SPF, regenerate DKIM, verify DMARC, send through SMTP, and test until Gmail shows three passes. If your mail is still going astray after that, contact us and we will trace it with you.
