phpBB Hosting: A UK Guide

By Pete White
Reading Time: < 1 minutes

phpBB is one of the longest-established open-source forum platforms, with a large, mature library of styles and extensions built up over many years, comparable in scope and age to MyBB.

What phpBB offers

User and permission management: Granular control over forum access and moderation.
Extension library: A long-established library of styles and extensions.
Multilingual support: Native support for running forums in multiple languages.

What phpBB needs from hosting

phpBB runs on PHP with a MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL database, and is lightweight enough for standard shared hosting. As with any forum, database performance becomes more important as membership and post volume grow.

FAQs about hosting phpBB

How does phpBB compare to MyBB?

The two are broadly comparable, long-established open-source forum platforms with similar hosting requirements. See our guide to MyBB hosting; the choice between them is largely a matter of preference for the admin interface and available styles.

Im curious – arent there other platforms offering similar features as phpBB? Why is phpBB highlighted above others? Is it because of its ease with Switchweb?

Interesting read! But arent there more modern platforms than phpBB? I mean, its nice to have it simplified on Switchweb, but why stick with older technology? Is nostalgia a valid reason? What are your thoughts, folks?

Fantastic support from Pete whilst we were evaluating possible providers, made us chose Switchweb. Also the price is very good compared to other providers - an important factor for our residents association

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After Dreamhost trebled their charges to over £450 for a three-year contract, I needed to look elsewhere for a new hosting service, particularly for my email addresses. After looking at all the ‘big boys’, I came across Switchweb, which offered a yearly contract at a third of what I would have to pay. I must confess I had some concerns about moving to a small company I’d not heard of, but the transfer was a breeze, and within a couple of hours I had my email set up and my website transferred. Everything is working perfectly, and I can see no difference in the service. I had a welcome email from the owner and offers of help in setting things up, but their interface was so easy to navigate that I didn’t need any help. Nice to know, though, that it’s there if you need it.

If you are an individual or small business looking for very affordable web hosting, or even just an email provider, I would not hesitate to recommend Switchweb.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Switchweb has done a wonderful job of porting an old website and then hosting it for our local history society.
For an additional fee, Pete at Switchweb then converted it to be in a WordPress environment, and he gave us novices a tutorial on how to edit and add to the pages. He has been very helpful in answering promptly all our questions.
Highly recommended.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I'm super impressed with the very rare level of support given when I bumped into a problem deploying an App, which was of my making. Pete offer to do it for me which he did and it was all up and running the next morning. Since then I've done a lot of modification of file and setting up emails etc and found Switchweb very easy to understand and navigate.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Switchweb.
