Web Hosting for International Schools

Web Hosting for International Schools

What an international school website needs from hosting: why a CDN is essential for a distributed audience, how translation multiplies database load, forms that accept international details, and email that arrives abroad.

Short answer: international schools have two hosting requirements no other school has. Visitors distributed across time zones and connection speeds, which makes a CDN essential. And translated versions, which multiply your page count and put real load on the database. Neither is expensive to solve, but both need deciding rather than discovering.

Looking for plans rather than guidance? Our education hosting plans start at ยฃ39 a year and renew at ยฃ39, with a CDN, free SSL and daily backups included.

Global performance is the first requirement

Your families are relocating, often at short notice, comparing schools across continents. They are reading your admissions and fees pages from wherever they currently live, which may be a long way from your server.

A content delivery network serves your images from a location near the visitor rather than sending everything from one place. For a local business that is a modest gain. For you it decides whether the site is usable in Jakarta.

Test your own load times from the cities your families actually live in. Free tools will do this, and the results usually show where the effort should go. Our plain English guide to Core Web Vitals covers how it is measured.

Translation multiplies more than the word count

This is the requirement schools underestimate. Running your site in three languages does not just mean three times the pages; most translation plugins query the database on every page load to work out which version to serve.

Practical consequences:

  • You need more PHP memory and database headroom than a single-language brochure site of the same apparent size
  • Caching becomes genuinely important, and it has to be language-aware or visitors get served the wrong version
  • Storage grows, since translated PDFs and prospectuses accumulate per language
  • Your sitemap and hreflang setup matter, or search engines show the wrong language version to the wrong country

If you only translate a few key pages, admissions, fees, curriculum and contact, the load stays modest. Translating everything is where sites slow down. Prioritise the pages that carry decisions rather than translating the news archive.

Your careers section is doing real work

Teachers researching overseas posts read school websites thoroughly, and recruitment is often as valuable to you as admissions.

The hosting-relevant part: applications need to arrive reliably from anywhere in the world, and forms need to accept international phone numbers and addresses. A form rejecting a non-UK number is rejecting exactly the candidates you want.

Forms and email across borders

Two failures, both invisible from your side.

Forms fail silently. The form submits, the sender sees a confirmation, the email never arrives. WordPress sends mail through PHP by default, which is frequently filtered.

Your outbound mail lands in spam abroad. Different countries use different mail providers with different filtering norms, and an admissions acknowledgement in a spam folder looks like being ignored.

  • Send form mail through authenticated SMTP rather than PHP mail
  • Add SPF, DKIM and DMARC records to your domain, which matter more the further your mail travels
  • Check validation rules accept international phone and address formats
  • Test monthly, including from a non-UK context if you can

Our guides to contact forms not sending emails and SPF, DKIM and DMARC cover both. Our email hosting plans include unlimited mailboxes with 10GB each, so admissions, the registrar and heads of section can all have proper addresses.

Storage, across languages and years

Photography, prospectuses per language, curriculum documents, term dates by year. It accumulates faster than a single-language school site, and WordPress creates several resized copies of every image.

Keep PDFs small enough to download on mobile data abroad, which usually means under about ten megabytes, or publish key content as web pages instead.

Photographs and the file that stays

Deleting an image from a page does not remove the file. It stays in the media library at its original URL, still reachable, still in your backups and possibly in your CDN cache. Delete the file and clear the cache.

Worth being deliberate about, since images from an international school circulate widely and across jurisdictions with different expectations.

What plan you actually need

Single language, brochure site: entry-level shared hosting with a CDN. Around ยฃ39 a year.

Two or more languages: more PHP memory and database headroom, plus language-aware caching. Move up a tier and expect to review it as the site grows.

Several campuses with their own sites: our multi-site plans run them from one account and one bill.

Check the renewal figure rather than the introductory rate. Our guide to cheap web hosting in the UK covers what should be standard.

Frequently asked questions

Why is our site slow for families abroad?

Usually no CDN, so every image travels from one server. Test load times from the cities you recruit from.

Does a multilingual site need more hosting?

Yes. Translation plugins query the database on every page load, so you need more PHP memory and caching than a single-language site of the same size.

Should we translate the whole site?

Usually not. Translate the pages that carry decisions, admissions, fees, curriculum and contact. Translating everything is where performance suffers.

Why do applicants say they never heard back?

Often mail landing in spam abroad. Missing or incorrect SPF, DKIM and DMARC records are the usual cause.

Our form rejects international phone numbers. Does it matter?

Yes. It rejects exactly the enquiries and applications you want, and those people rarely email instead.
