Web Hosting for Boarding Schools
What a boarding school website needs from hosting: testing load times from the countries you recruit from, why a CDN is a requirement rather than a feature, keeping prospectuses under attachment limits, and email that arrives abroad.
Short answer: this is the one school website where hosting choices genuinely change the outcome, because a meaningful share of your most valuable visitors are several thousand miles away on a slow connection. A CDN is a requirement here rather than a feature, and testing your own load times from overseas is the single most useful thing you can do.
Looking for plans rather than guidance? Our education hosting plans start at ยฃ39 a year and renew at ยฃ39, with a CDN, free SSL and daily backups included.
Test your site from where your families actually are
Most school websites are built and checked on fast connections in the same county as the school. A prospective parent in Lagos, Almaty or Ho Chi Minh City has a very different experience, and a media-heavy prospectus page loading in two seconds locally can take twenty there.
Free tools will show you load times from specific cities. Run your homepage, your admissions page and your fees page through one, from three or four countries you actually recruit from. The results are usually sobering and they tell you where to spend effort.
Our plain English guide to Core Web Vitals covers how load speed is measured.
Why a CDN matters here and not elsewhere
For a local business, a content delivery network is a modest improvement. For you it is the difference between a working site and an abandoned one.
Without it, every image travels from a single server in the UK to a device in Asia or West Africa, over a long distance and often a congested route. With it, images are served from a location near the visitor. On an image-heavy prospectus page that is not a marginal gain.
Alongside that, the ordinary things matter more than usual: resize images before uploading, use lazy loading, and let the CDN convert to modern formats.
Virtual tours and video are the heaviest thing you publish
For a family who cannot visit before applying, a proper tour of boarding houses and facilities is the most persuasive content on the site. It is also large.
Host video on a specialist platform rather than your own server. That way it adapts to the viewer’s connection instead of buffering, which matters enormously on a slow international link. Keep the tour on a page that loads quickly and lets the visitor choose to start it, rather than autoplaying something enormous.
The same applies to a digital prospectus. A 60MB PDF is functionally unavailable to a family on mobile data abroad. Keep it under about ten megabytes, or publish the key content as web pages.
Forms that accept international details
A practical fault worth checking: forms that reject non-UK phone numbers or require a UK postcode format. That rejects exactly the enquiries you most want, and the family will not email instead.
Beyond that, forms fail silently in the usual way, and it is worse for you because international enquiries are infrequent enough that you may not notice a gap.
- Send form mail through authenticated SMTP rather than PHP mail
- Add SPF, DKIM and DMARC records to your domain
- Deliver to a monitored admissions address
- Test monthly, including with an international-format phone number
Our guides to contact forms not sending emails and SPF, DKIM and DMARC cover both.
Email deliverability across borders
This is the second thing that quietly costs boarding schools enquiries. An acknowledgement or prospectus link landing in spam in another country, with a different mail provider and different filtering norms, is invisible to you and looks like being ignored to them.
Authentication records are the fix, and they matter more the further your mail travels. Our email hosting plans include unlimited mailboxes on your domain with 10GB each, so admissions, the registrar and houseparents can all have proper addresses.
Storage grows with photography and prospectuses
Professional photography, tour assets, prospectus versions by year, and a growing archive. Check your allowance and how it scales, and bear in mind WordPress creates several resized copies of every image you upload.
Photographs of pupils, and the file that stays
Same practical point as any school. Deleting an image from a page does not remove the file: it stays in the media library at its original URL, still reachable, still in your backups, and possibly still in your CDN cache. Delete the file itself and clear the cache.
Worth being deliberate about this given that your images circulate internationally and are harder to track once shared.
What plan you actually need
Entry-level shared hosting is workable, but a CDN is not optional and storage should be generous. SSD storage, free SSL, daily backups, unlimited mailboxes on your domain. Around ยฃ39 a year.
Budgets are set well ahead, so check the renewal figure rather than the introductory rate. Our guide to cheap web hosting in the UK covers what should be standard.
Frequently asked questions
Why is our website slow for overseas families?
Usually no CDN, so every image travels from one UK server. Test load times from the countries you recruit from and you will see the difference.
Should we host our virtual tour ourselves?
No. Use a video platform so it adapts to the viewer’s connection. Self-hosted video will buffer badly on an international link.
How large should our digital prospectus be?
Under about ten megabytes, or published as web pages. A 60MB PDF is unavailable to a family on mobile data abroad.
Why do overseas families say they never heard back?
Often mail landing in spam abroad. Missing or incorrect SPF, DKIM and DMARC records are the usual cause.
Our form rejects international phone numbers. Does that matter?
Yes, considerably. It rejects the enquiries you most want and those families rarely email instead. Check the validation rules.
