Web Hosting for Local Shops & Boutiques

Web Hosting for Local Shops & Boutiques

What a local shop or boutique needs from hosting: whether you need an online shop at all, what changes if you do, handling Instagram traffic bursts, and why order confirmation emails fail.

Short answer: the first question is whether you need an online shop at all. For a lot of small retailers the honest answer is no: a brochure site with click-and-collect enquiries, plus Instagram, does the job for a fraction of the cost and none of the maintenance. If you do need a shop, that changes the plan considerably.

Looking for plans rather than guidance? Our web hosting plans start at ยฃ39 a year, and our WooCommerce hosting guide covers the shop case.

Do you actually need a shop?

Worth answering honestly before spending anything, because an online shop is a commitment: product photography, stock accuracy, packing, postage, returns, and a site that needs maintaining and securing.

You probably do not need one if your stock turns over fast and unpredictably, your range is large but shallow, most customers are local, or nobody has time to pack parcels between serving customers. A brochure site showing what you stock, with local delivery and reserve-in-store enquiries, converts perfectly well and runs on the cheapest plan.

You probably do need one if you have a consistent core range, a genuine reason people would buy from you rather than a marketplace, and someone whose job includes fulfilment.

A middle path works well: a brochure site with a small curated shop of your best-selling, easy-to-post items rather than trying to put the whole shop online.

If you do run a shop, the requirement changes

A shop is a database-driven application rather than a set of pages:

  • More PHP memory, since WooCommerce and its extensions run on every page load
  • Object caching, because product and category pages query the database constantly
  • Cart and checkout excluded from page caching, or you get stale baskets and rejected orders
  • Free SSL, non-negotiable once you take payment, though payment itself should go through an established provider rather than your server
  • Reliable order emails, which is where small shops quietly fail

That last one matters. WooCommerce sends order confirmations through PHP mail by default and they frequently get filtered, so the customer thinks the order failed. Send order mail through authenticated SMTP and set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your domain. Our guide to SPF, DKIM and DMARC explains the records.

Instagram traffic arrives in bursts

Most of your online traffic will come from social rather than search, which means it is spiky. A post that performs well, or a local account sharing you, sends a burst of visitors within an hour.

Page caching handles browsing comfortably, since everyone is looking at the same page. Have it configured before you need it, along with a CDN. Do not embed an Instagram feed on the site to try to capture this: those widgets add several seconds to load time and rarely earn it. Link to the profile instead.

Our plain English guide to Core Web Vitals covers how load speed is measured.

Product photography, resized

Shop photography accumulates as your range changes, and it is the usual reason a small retail site is slow. Resize to around 1600px wide before uploading, use lazy loading on category pages, and serve through a CDN. WordPress creates several resized copies of each upload, so storage goes faster than the number of products suggests.

Your enquiry form is doing the local work

Reserve-in-store, local delivery and product questions come by form, and forms fail invisibly: they submit, the customer sees a confirmation, the email never arrives.

Send form mail through authenticated SMTP rather than PHP mail, deliver to an address someone checks daily, and test monthly. Our guide to contact forms not sending emails covers the causes.

An address on your own domain rather than a free webmail account is included with most plans. Our email hosting plans include unlimited mailboxes with 10GB each.

Backups scale with what you hold

A brochure site is rebuildable. A shop holds orders, customer records and stock levels, so daily backups of files and database, retained for weeks and stored off the server, become genuinely important rather than a convenience.

Register the domain in the business’s name with auto-renew set. Our complete guide to UK domain names covers registration and renewals.

What plan you actually need

Brochure plus click-and-collect enquiries: entry-level shared hosting, around ยฃ39 a year. Genuinely sufficient.

A small curated shop: usually still workable on an entry plan; watch performance as the catalogue grows.

A real shop: the next tier for PHP memory and object caching.

Check the renewal figure rather than the introductory rate. Our guide to cheap web hosting in the UK covers what should be standard.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an online shop?

Often not. If your stock turns over unpredictably and your customers are local, a brochure site with reserve-in-store and local delivery does the job for far less cost and maintenance.

Can I run a small shop on cheap hosting?

A curated range of a few dozen products, usually yes. A full catalogue with variations needs more PHP memory and object caching.

Why do customers say they got no order confirmation?

WooCommerce sending mail through PHP and being filtered. Authenticated SMTP plus SPF, DKIM and DMARC fixes most cases.

Should I embed my Instagram feed?

No. Those widgets add several seconds to load time. Link to the profile instead.
