osCommerce Hosting: A UK Guide

By Pete White
Reading Time: < 1 minutes

osCommerce is one of the oldest open-source eCommerce platforms still in use, dating back to the early 2000s. It remains functional for simpler stores, though its age means a smaller, less actively developed ecosystem compared to newer platforms like WooCommerce or PrestaShop.

What osCommerce offers

Core eCommerce functionality: Product catalogue, checkout, and order management.
Add-on contributions: A long-standing, if now less actively maintained, library of community add-ons.

What osCommerce needs from hosting

osCommerce runs on PHP with a MySQL or MariaDB database. Given its age, check the specific version you’re running is compatible with current PHP versions, since older osCommerce releases can have compatibility issues with newer PHP that require either an upgrade or careful version pinning.

FAQs about hosting osCommerce

Should I start a new store on osCommerce today?

For a new store, we’d generally suggest a more actively developed platform like WooCommerce or PrestaShop, given osCommerce’s slower pace of ongoing development. If you’re maintaining an existing osCommerce store, it remains viable provided you keep on top of PHP and security compatibility.

The articles explanation of osCommerce is spot-on. However, Im curious about how osCommerces features compare to alternatives like WooCommerce? Is the learning curve for osCommerce steep for beginners?

osCommerce is user-friendly, but not the best. Shopify and WooCommerce offer more features and support for beginners.

Interesting read, but isn’t Magento or Shopify a more popular choice for E-commerce these days? I wonder if osCommerce can compete with their features and ease of use. Thoughts?

Magento and Shopify are popular, yes. But osCommerce is the underdog mastering the race!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After Dreamhost trebled their charges to over £450 for a three-year contract, I needed to look elsewhere for a new hosting service, particularly for my email addresses. After looking at all the ‘big boys’, I came across Switchweb, which offered a yearly contract at a third of what I would have to pay. I must confess I had some concerns about moving to a small company I’d not heard of, but the transfer was a breeze, and within a couple of hours I had my email set up and my website transferred. Everything is working perfectly, and I can see no difference in the service. I had a welcome email from the owner and offers of help in setting things up, but their interface was so easy to navigate that I didn’t need any help. Nice to know, though, that it’s there if you need it.

If you are an individual or small business looking for very affordable web hosting, or even just an email provider, I would not hesitate to recommend Switchweb.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Switchweb has done a wonderful job of porting an old website and then hosting it for our local history society.
For an additional fee, Pete at Switchweb then converted it to be in a WordPress environment, and he gave us novices a tutorial on how to edit and add to the pages. He has been very helpful in answering promptly all our questions.
Highly recommended.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I'm super impressed with the very rare level of support given when I bumped into a problem deploying an App, which was of my making. Pete offer to do it for me which he did and it was all up and running the next morning. Since then I've done a lot of modification of file and setting up emails etc and found Switchweb very easy to understand and navigate.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Switchweb.
